Experiences
The historic gateway to the old market. Gold, spices, textiles and small Indian-run shops in the lanes behind it.
An archaeological site on the north coast with a museum. Go late afternoon for the sunset.
One of the largest mosques in the region. Dress modestly; women cover their hair. Check visiting hours before you go.
A temple in the old souq area, long associated with Bahrain's Indian community. Dress conservatively and follow temple rules.
A good first stop to understand the Dilmun history and pearl diving.
Do not fill every hour with landmarks. Pick one major zone per half-day and leave room for meals, traffic, hotel time and spontaneous stops.
Movement
Airport taxis are metered. Bahrain International Airport says the meter starts at BHD 2, plus BHD 2 for airport pickup.
Careem and Uber can be booked at the airport, with a meeting point at the Arrivals curbside next to Gate 1.
Red buses run by Bahrain Public Transport Company. The airport lists a single ticket from the driver at BHD 0.300, or a GO Card for cheaper trips with a daily cap of BHD 0.700.
Rental desks are in the airport arrivals hall. Check that your licence is accepted before you book.
Flights
The only international airport, on Muharraq island near Manama. Buses run 24/7, and metered taxis and ride-hailing pickups are outside arrivals.
Airlines
Gulf Air, Air India Express and IndiGo are among the airlines listed at Bahrain International Airport.
Cities
The airport's route map lists Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi, Calicut, Thiruvananthapuram, Mangaluru, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Goa.
Connections
From other cities, connect through a Gulf hub or an Indian metro. Check transit rules if you change planes in another country.
Neighbourhoods
The easiest base, close to malls, restaurants and the souq. Many hotels from budget to five-star.
A busy area with many hotels and restaurants, popular for short stays.
Close to the airport and the Pearling Path, with a quieter feel.
Resorts and apartments by the sea, good for families who want beach time.
Booking principle: a cheaper hotel far from your daily plans may cost more after taxis and lost time. Choose the area first, hotel second.
Eat & drink
Bahrain has a large Indian community. You will find South Indian, North Indian and Kerala restaurants across Manama, especially around the old souq.
Many Indian restaurants are pure vegetarian or have clear veg menus. In Arabic restaurants, ask for hummus, falafel, fattoush, tabbouleh and grilled vegetables.
Ask for no onion and no garlic in Indian restaurants. For hotels and tours, mention your diet when you book.
Try karak chai, fresh dates and halwa from the souq.
