Where to go
The walled Old City (Icherisheher), the Maiden Tower, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, the long seaside Boulevard and the Flame Towers lit up at night.
Best for · First-timers, food, nightlife
Rock carvings and mud volcanoes south of Baku. On the Absheron peninsula, the Ateshgah fire temple and Yanar Dag's burning hillside.
Best for · History, half-day trips
Forest resorts, cable cars and lakes at the foot of the Greater Caucasus, about 3.5–4 hours by road from Baku.
Best for · Families, cooler summers
Silk Road town with the painted Khan's Palace, old caravanserais and sweet Sheki halva.
Best for · Culture, slow travel
Apple orchards, mountain villages such as Khinalug, and the Shahdag ski and summer resort.
Best for · Snow in winter, hiking in summer
Experiences
Narrow stone lanes, carpet shops and the Maiden Tower. Go early or near sunset.
An evening stroll along the Caspian, with the Flame Towers' light show above the city.
Zaha Hadid's flowing white building, with exhibitions inside and photo spots outside.
Ancient carvings in a national reserve, then bubbling mud cones nearby. Most visitors go with a tour or driver.
A historic fire temple once used by Indian traders and pilgrims, and a hillside where natural gas burns all year.
Two or three days through Gabala and Sheki, or Guba and Shahdag, for green valleys and fresh air.
Do not fill every hour with landmarks. Pick one major zone per half-day and leave room for meals, traffic, hotel time and spontaneous stops.
Movement
Cheap and frequent. Buy a rechargeable BakuKart card at metro stations.
Bolt and Uber show the fare upfront. Agree the price first in street taxis.
The easiest way to reach Gobustan, Absheron sights and the mountain towns.
Buses run from Baku's main bus station to Gabala, Sheki and Guba. Trains link Baku with some regional cities.
Entry by land has stayed closed to ordinary travellers. Arrive by air into Baku.
Flights
The main international gateway and arrival point for flights from India. About 30 minutes by road from the city centre.
Non-stop route
Azerbaijan Airlines lists regular non-stop flights from New Delhi to Baku, taking about 5 hours.
One-stop options
From other Indian cities, connect through Gulf or Turkish hubs such as Dubai, Doha or Istanbul.
Before you fly
Get your e-visa from evisa.gov.az, print it, and carry your return ticket, hotel booking and medical insurance papers.
Time difference
Azerbaijan is 1.5 hours behind India.
Neighbourhoods
Boutique hotels inside the walls. Walk to the main sights.
Central and lively, with restaurants, shops and sea views.
Large international hotels with views over the bay.
Mountain resorts with family rooms, pools and activities.
Small guesthouses and a restored caravanserai hotel near the old town.
Booking principle: a cheaper hotel far from your daily plans may cost more after taxis and lost time. Choose the area first, hotel second.
Eat & drink
Plov (saffron rice), qutab (thin stuffed flatbreads, also made with greens or pumpkin), dolma, and black tea with jam.
Ask for qutab with greens, lentil soup, salads, fresh bread, cheese and vegetable dishes. Say 'Ət yemirəm' (I don't eat meat). Many soups are made with meat stock, so ask.
Baku has several Indian restaurants, mostly in the city centre. Outside Baku, Indian food is rare, so carry snacks on road trips.
Sheki halva, pakhlava and shekerbura are popular gifts to take home.
