Experiences
Take the ferry to Manly for the classic harbour view.
Day trip from Sydney for the Three Sisters and bush walks.
Coastal drive from Melbourne to the Twelve Apostles. Long day; consider a night on the way.
Evening penguin parade, a popular trip from Melbourne.
Day boats from Cairns and Port Douglas. Non-swimmers can use glass-bottom boats or semi-submersibles.
Red Centre landmark, reached by a domestic flight. Very hot in summer.
Do not fill every hour with landmarks. Pick one major zone per half-day and leave room for meals, traffic, hotel time and spontaneous stops.
Movement
The quickest way between cities. Distances are long, so flying saves days on a short trip.
Trains, buses, trams and ferries are clean and reliable. Most cities use tap-on, tap-off cards or contactless bank cards.
Australia drives on the left, like India. Check what licence documents you need before renting a car, and watch for wildlife on country roads at night.
App-based rides and metered taxis are available in all major cities.
Scenic but slow. Good as an experience, not for saving time.
Flights
The busiest gateway. Train link to the city centre.
Large Indian community nearby. Airport bus to the city.
Closest major gateway for the Gold Coast.
The west coast gateway, closest to India by flying time.
Smaller, easy airport close to the city.
Flights
Check nonstop and one-stop options from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Many itineraries connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or the Gulf.
Transit visas
Your layover country may need its own transit visa. Check before booking.
Biosecurity
Australia is strict about food, seeds and plant or animal products. Declare all food you carry, including homemade snacks and spices, or leave it at home.
Neighbourhoods
Central, close to ferries and trains.
Large Indian food scene and lower hotel prices, with a train to the city.
Walkable with free trams inside the city zone.
Beachfront apartments, good for families.
Walk to reef boat terminals and restaurants.
Booking principle: a cheaper hotel far from your daily plans may cost more after taxis and lost time. Choose the area first, hotel second.
Eat & drink
Every major city has many, from South Indian tiffin to Punjabi dhabas. Harris Park in Sydney and Dandenong in Melbourne are well known for Indian food.
Menus often mark V for vegetarian and VG for vegan. Ask about egg and gelatine in desserts.
Large supermarkets sell ready meals, bread, fruit and plant-based options. Indian grocery shops are common in big cities.
Ask restaurants about onion, garlic and root vegetables. Indian restaurants understand the request best.
Buy spices and snacks after you land instead of bringing them through biosecurity.
What visitors actually notice
Local etiquette
• Apply for your visa before booking anything non-refundable.
• Declare all food and plant items when you land.
• Buy travel health insurance for every day of the trip.
• Use sunscreen, a hat and water every day outdoors.
• Swim only between the red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches.
• Keep a copy of your visa grant notice on your phone and on paper.
• Do not pay unknown websites that claim to sell Australian visas. Apply through ImmiAccount or a service that shows the government fee separately.
• Do not work while on a visitor visa.
• Do not stay past the date on your grant notice.
• Avoid packing homemade food, seeds or ghee in your bags.
• Avoid trying to see the whole country in one short trip.
When to go
South-east
Spring (Sep to Nov) and autumn (Mar to May) are mild. Summer is warm to hot; winter (Jun to Aug) is cool, especially in Melbourne.
Tropical north
Dry season (about May to Oct) is the most comfortable. The wet season brings heat, rain and storms.
West
Hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. Spring is pleasant.
Centre
Cooler months are best. Summer days can be extremely hot.
Essentials
Buy a local SIM or eSIM on arrival to keep maps and transport apps working.
